A concentration camp prisoner’s pipe

Pipe [MPS-f-451, Tower pipe exhibition]

A Dachau concentration camp prisoner’s pipe. Made during World War II in Dachau. The pipe’s head is solid, carved from ebony, with a plastic mouthpiece connected to the head with a brass ring. The carved part is shaped like the head of a bearded man in the “Jacob type,” and on his head is a fur hat resembling the Jewish headgear, the shtreimel. The workmanship indicates the artist’s skill. The base of the pipe is carved with the camp number 46585 and the inscription “Dachau,” as well as a symbol – the letter “P” in a triangle, indicating that the pipe belonged to a political prisoner of Polish nationality.
