1863 Uprising Pipe

Pipe [MPS-f-229, Tower Pipe Exhibition]

This pipe is composed of a stained meerschaum bowl adorned with an eagle – the Polish coat of arms – and the date 1863. The pipe is heavily worn, and the chimney is heavily charred and chipped. Pipe decorations typically reflected the owner’s preferences and beliefs. The pipe in question was used for political demonstrations, representing a tribute to Poland’s past and the uprising’s deeds. The pipe has an interesting history of acquisition. It was offered for sale as a set with a uniform and saber from the 1863 Uprising. The items were purchased by various collectors. The buyer later sold it to a museum. This pipe is one of the few “Polonica” items from the Uprising period found in Polish and private collections.
