Travel Bellows Camera: Kodak

An old Kodak camera with a bellows lens and leather case.

A portable, bellows camera for wide-format roll film with a 6×6 cm frame format. The camera body is made of sheet steel, in the form of an elongated cuboid with rounded shorter sides. The interior is coated with matte black varnish, and the exterior is finished with black leather. The rear panel opens completely, including the rounded corners, and closes with latches mounted 1/3 of the way along the left side. On the bottom left is a round opening for checking the film frame number, originally covered by a red glass. On the right is a vertical slit, covered by a movable flap, allowing for the application of an inscription to the negative. The flap is made of brass, lacquered black, and stamped with the inscription: USE AUTOGRAPHIC FILM / NO. A-116. Next to the flap, there are retained holders for a metal stylus (stylus). Attached to the inside are two spring-loaded bars that press the film against the bellows housing. The numbers and dates of patents in the United States, Canada, and Australia are stamped on the wall. The ends of the sticks, on which the film spools are mounted, are visible in the corners of the longer sides. At the top right is a chrome-plated film rewind handle. It takes the form of an arched, movable handle mounted on the stick. The ends of the shorter sides contain slots for the film spools. The name and model of the camera are stamped on the wall of one of the slots. The large, central section of the front wall opens, with an opening tab attached to the edge. The tab allows the wall to rest after opening and setting the camera down. The tab bears the embossed name: Kodak, written in neo-Gothic script, chrome-plated on a black background. The door is closed with a latch. The shutter release button is located on the narrow, “bottom” side of the camera. On the same side, in the center, is a threaded hole for attaching a tripod. Inside the body is a folded, movable black fabric bellows housing the lens. The lens, called the Kodak Ball Bearing Shutter, with a viewfinder with lenses and a mirror, is mounted on a clamp at the end of the bellows. A guide rail, or bellows rail, is mounted on the front of the camera. On the left side is a setting table with measurements in feet and meters, and on the right side is a plate with the manufacturer’s name and the number 13664. On one of the shorter sides of the rear panel is a short leather carrying strap embossed with the KODAK name.
