Stove

The two-story, double-box tiled stove consists of a lower and lower section separated by a cornice. It is constructed of relief tiles covered with colored glazes on a brick base. The base, approximately 20 cm high, with three arcades on the side walls and two on the so-called front wall, is covered with sand-lime mortar. On this is set the first row of tiles, so-called pedestal tiles, with a wavy surface, decorated with acanthus leaf motif, white on a navy blue background. Above these is a row of frieze tiles with a motif of so-called unicorns, but these are actually fantastical creatures with the head and forelegs of a horse with a horn (unicorn) and a rear end shaped similar to a dolphin’s tail, with a lateral fin similar to a leaf. Both creatures are arranged symmetrically around a small plant in the center of the tile. The motifs are also white on a navy blue background, while the smooth stripes delineating the field with the unicorns are glazed green. These are adorned with a row of narrow, half-cylinder tiles, featuring a white bow motif with a yellow knot on a navy blue background. Both levels of the stove are constructed from tiles with the same pattern. This is a so-called continuation pattern, meaning that motifs from adjacent tiles interlock. It is formed by a small “rosette” motif of four stylized bell cups around a small, circular center inscribed in the grid. The grid is formed by a smooth ribbon, whose vertically running strips are connected by cross-links. The tile background is navy blue, the motifs white, and the connectors and centers yellow. The lower chest extends to the wall of the great room, as the stove was fired from the corridor. The upper chest is narrower. The two chests are separated by a quarter-circular cornice with a motif of acanthus leaves, white on a navy blue background, and a row of frieze tiles featuring unicorns, with half-cylinders with bows above and below. The upper chest is topped by a half-cylinder with bows and a frieze with a motif of bellflower branches in vases, white on a navy blue background, with green stripes along the field border. The whole is crowned by a cornice with the same motif as the cornice between the chests. On the cornice is a so-called crown of semi-circular tiles featuring an eagle motif, also white on a navy blue background. The crown, beak, and talons of the eagle are yellow, while the bases of the wings are green. The side edges of the tiles feature large white leaves with green centers, and the smooth edge is painted green.
