The origins of this room’s name are unknown, but it appears relatively early in descriptions of Kraków and Przemyśl tenement houses. It refers to a small room located in the rear section of the building, above the hallway leading to the back of the building. Its existence stemmed from the fact that the rear hallways were much narrower than the front ones and correspondingly lower than the other rooms, providing additional space between the hallway vault and the first-floor ceiling. This space was therefore used for additional rooms. According to records in archival inventories, these rooms had a small, barred window, sometimes with a metal shutter, indicating that valuables were stored there. Access was further complicated by the entrance being located in the great room, rather than directly from the stairwell.
