This Hanukkah candlestick closely resembles a menorah – the traditional Jewish holy candlestick. The difference between them is that a menorah always has seven branches. Hanukkah candlesticks, or Hanukkah lamps, hold eight candles. This number corresponds to the eight days of the holiday. According to tradition, a new candle is lit each evening. Some Hanukkah candlesticks have an additional ninth branch – called the “servant” because the candle embedded in it lights the others. The candlestick is decorated with a figurine of a perched eagle with raised wings. In Judaism, depictions of birds or griffins symbolize the divine realm. The Torah mentions the eagle’s qualities – strength and protectiveness – which symbolize the character of God.
