Benedictine Cross

Hutsul Cross – 32 cm high, made of brown wood. The cross dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. It consists of three arms and a handle. The cross was used for blessing. It is in the collection of the National Museum of the Przemyśl Region. The cross’s distinguishing feature is the double figure of Christ. At the top is a brass cast of the Crucified Christ, and below is a carved figure of Jesus stretched out on the cross. The cross is richly decorated with carved ornamentation. The ornament, composed of a series of small triangles, fills the entire surface of the cross. On the first and third arms of the cross are carved angel heads with wings. On the middle arm, next to the hands of the carved Christ, are two figures. The cross is an example of the folk religious art of the Hutsul region.
